Eileen Munro is Emeritus Professor of Social Policy in the Department of Social Policy at the London School of Economics

Eileen’s background in both philosophy and social work has shaped her research interests in reasoning skills in child protection, leading to an interest in how organisational cultures help or hinder good quality reasoning and practice. Seeking a fuller understanding of the complex causal processes in working with families has triggered a critical interest in the philosophy of social science underlying the evidence-based policy and practice movements.

Eileen’s book Effective Child Protection is widely read internationally, published in 2004 it is now in its 3rd edition. Between 2010 and 2012 Professor Munro led the Munro Review into the English Children’s Services, three reports arose from this review.

Eileen and Andrew Turnell have collaborated for over a decade and a half. Their work together focuses on research and consultancy work that assists Children’s Services align their organisation with the agency’s desired practice approach and outcomes. Numerous joint publications have emerged from this work including:

1. Volumes One and Two of ‘You can’t grow roses in concrete’ reporting on the implementation of Signs of Safety within 10 English Local Authorities between 2014 and 2016

2. A 2013 paper called, ‘Soft is hardest: Leading for learning in child protection services following a child fatality’. Child Welfare, 92:2.
